Scania buses make their Berlin debut
Scania Citywide buses are being used on the streets of Berlin for the first time. The vehicles are part of an extensive fleet owned by Germany’s largest public transport company.
The first 70 of 156 low-floor articulated buses ordered by BVG from Scania Deutschland have joined BVG’s 1,300-vehicle strong fleet of buses.
Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) has been synonymous with reliable public transport in the German capital of Berlin since 1929. The company currently operates 10 metro lines, 22 tram lines and 149 bus lines, transporting some 950 million passengers each year.
And now, the first 70 of 156 low-floor articulated buses ordered by BVG from Scania Deutschland have joined BVG’s 1,300-vehicle strong fleet of buses.
Underfloor heating keeps the front entry door area dry in rainy weather and free from ice during winter.
“This is the first time that Scania has ever delivered buses to Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe,” says Klas Dahlberg, Senior Vice President Buses and Coaches at Scania. “We are pleased with the large order from Berlin and appreciate the confidence they have shown in our abilities. With the 156 low-floor buses, we’re offering BVG innovative technology for modern public transport.”
Access for allThe 18-metre, triple-axle buses have space for almost 100 seated and standing passengers and have two large multi-functional areas with enough room to comfortably house two wheelchair users and one pram. The floors are fully accessible for passengers with disabilities and the front area is particularly beneficial to passengers with walking frames.

The legibility of panels displaying information about stops on the bus has been improved to help passengers with vision impairment. There are also red signal lamps at doors 2 and 3 that indicate that the doors are closing. A camera in the right exterior mirror eliminates any blind spots to prevent accidents with pedestrians and cyclists when making turns.
Better fuel consumptionTo satisfy the stringent requirements related to low emissions, the vehicles come with high-pressure fuel injection and SCR – an exhaust gas after treatment system with modern filter technology. Along with the new eco-friendly Euro 6 engine, this reduces fuel consumption by up to six percent compared to the previous Euro 5 generation of vehicles.

Scania and BVG are also working in close collaboration on the maintenance and repair of the buses. BVG employees have undergone extensive training by Scania to enable them to properly perform all the necessary work themselves while professional and cooperative support from the Scania partner in Berlin is also available.
The remaining vehicles will be called off by BVG for delivery in subsequent years.
